1Question OS4.x - What's The Point... on 31/1/2012, 16:08

Having been using the Amiga as my only computer system since 1986 and only being on the internet for less than two years thanks to an old second hand iMac, one thing that really has surprised me in my time on the net is the strange belief some folk have in OS 4.x... confused

First lets put OS 4.x into it's real perspective and give it a reality check... Smilie

It's been in development for gawd knows how many years and it's users call it "Next Generation" yet OS 4.x and the hardware it runs on is anything but "Next Generation" and is in fact a generation of both hardware & software that passed away a long, long time ago... Rolling Eyes

It's produced and sold by Hyperion who are hardly industry giants and are more akin to a "bedroom" programming crew who do stuff in their spare time than a "real" software development business... Rolling Eyes

I mean how many copies of OS 4.x have been sold, a couple of thousand maybe !!! (I even bought OS 4.0 but very seldom use it)... Crazy

The thing I find fascinating though in regard to OS 4.x are the few who do actually use it (maybe a couple of hundred at max), who seem to think there are masses of developers out there for this system and are forever posting about how to keep these developers with "Bounties" (most dumbest concept ever). Now I dunno just how many folk actually "develop" OS 4.x stuff but I reckon the number is tiny and begging or trying to bribe them with "bounties" has obviously been a dismal failure... Neutral

So it kinda begs the question about OS4.x... What's the point... Surprised

It's produced add hock and as both software & the hardware it runs on then "Next Generation" as it's users call it died off years ago just like the Star Trek TV series & films... Wink

Guess I've just answered my own question... there is no point to OS 4.x you'd be better just buying a real Amiga and enjoying it for what it is with all the plethora of software that's available for it, instead of wasting your life hoping one day that OS 4.x will actually catch up with computers of the late 90's era... Smilie

Odd thing about OS4.x & it's users, It's kinda like a bunch of people waiting around for the invention of the printed word but no one has told them that happened a long time ago but as they don't know this they eagerly babble and speculate about the coming one day of the printed word... strange lot really... Very Happy

Day Don't Like Me Very Much Over There... Bah or Meh

Tried the proper MorphOS many moons ago when it was an actual Amiga product, but it's not really anything to do with the Amiga anymore so it doesn't interest me as it not Amiga related... Smilie

Well I'm still running Workbench 3.1 never tried anything else......I thought about upgrading to 3.5 after reading so many reviews in Amiga Format recently. (As in, I've recently acquired ALOT of Amiga Format magazines and it was the last OS before they closed)......and it seemed okay in there......

I only use 3.5 myself these days (3.9 was pointless) and it runs everything just fine and has quite few improvements over 3.1... Smilie

I heartily recommend giving it a go... Smilie

Just don't see the point in it myself, like I say it's an OS that's about 20 years out of date and only runs on hardware that's almost if not actually obsolete, so what the point in pretending it's "Next Generation" or hoping that it will be the next big thing... Rolling Eyes

OS4 missed the boat by at least 10 years and instead of wasting all this time developing it they would have just been better writing new apps & utils for real Amiga hardware in 68K for OS 3.x. After all that's still where the main user base lies when it come to the Amiga... Wink

And if the NatAmi ever sees the light of day it will be of no use on that because the NatAmi will be 68k based and not PPC, so if it ever takes off then OS4 would be left behind (again) as it would be no use to a NatAmi owner... Smilie

Just seems a lot of who-hah over nothing... Rolling Eyes

Me = Amithlon fan. OK shoot me because it isn't real Amiga hardware. But when it was released it clearly ran quite well. So this is where your above quote comes into play. Had they stuck with Amithlon and poured efforts into 68K wares, what would things be like today?

Gimme a wee while while I find me gun... Smilie

Gotta be honest, was never into the whole Amithlon thing, too expensive & flakey for what it did... Sad

It don't really matter what thing would be like today cos nothing ever happend, so just like OS4 there's no point in wishful thinking and "what ifs", better to just enjoy what we have and make the best of it I reckon... Smilie
